17 Mar 2007 - Frantastic Day in the Forest

In the middle of all the excitement of the Essex Championships, swimmers from Thurrock Swimming Club took part in The Waltham Forest Secondary Age Group Development Meet on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th March (Mother's Day!).

The swimmers included some of the Club's up and coming younger stars. Nine year old Emma Cassidy got the weekend off to a flying start by winning her first competitive gold medal in the 200m backstroke (3.25.91). Emma also came 3rd in the 4x1 length individual medley (1.43.61), this a staggering 28 second PB. Emma was joined on the podium for the backstroke by her squad training buddy Eloise Lyons who won a 4th place medal (3.42.43)

It was a successful weekend for Francesca Day of the Aveley School who picked up medals for all her 3 races - a four sec PB in her 100m butterfly ensured a 4th place medal (1.17.63) and outstanding swims in both the 100m back (1.16.80) and 100m breast (1.29.10) meant Silver medal podium placings.

Teenage twins Alex and Thomas Mangan students at Chafford Hundred Campus both picked up medals in the 100m freestyle, Alex with gold (1.06.52) and Thomas with a 5th place (1.09.30).

Senior squad swimmers Molly Epsly (1.15.84), Charlotte Lamb (1.17.10) and Whitney Hard (1.17.91) all picked up medals from the final heat of the girls 100m backstroke, 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.

In session two of the competition, Sarah Makovics won gold in the girls 200m butterfly with a (4.25.80). Medals were in abundance for the butterfly discipline over the full weekend with golds also being won by Lily Mann in the 10 year 200m event (3.27.38) and victory in the girls 100m butterfly. Whitney Hard picked up an impressive silver medal in the 100m fly. Lily completed a good weekend picking up a Silver medal in her 200m breast (3.49.20).

Elite swimmer James Mitchell from William Edwards School secured gold medal with a 1.06.10 personal best time in the boys 14 year old 100m freestyle.

Conor Harold, Amy Hatfield, Harry Geggus and Thomas Head all made their one race visits worthwhile by all picking up medals. Conor with a Silver in the 14 year old 100m breast (1.23.88); Amy in the 14 year 100m breast and Harry from Tudor Court School in the boys 10 year 200m butterfly (3.39.22) knocking 19 seconds off his personal best time. Thomas Head also had an impressive swim in the 11 year old boys 200m butterfly with a 7 sec PB time of 3.11.46.

Thurrock?s 11 year old boys swam well with James Paton securing 5th place with a 13 sec PB in the 200m freestyle (2.59.31). Training colleague Nicholas Umfreville swam an excellent 200m backstroke to swim to a Bronze medal (3.11.45) with an 8 second PB.

Katie and Emma Backhurst of Grays Convent both took medals home to Thurrock. Katie (13) with a Bronze in the 100m butterfly (1.20.36) and a well deserved gold in the 13 year old 4 x 1 length individual medley (1.19.14). Emma (15) swam to two successful Silvers, in the 100m butterfly (1.16.31) and also in the 4 x 1L individual medley (1.18.54).

Thurrock's 9 year old boys had a fantastic weekend picking up numerous medals. Daniel Thompson picked up a 4th place in his 4 x 1L individual medley (1.46.8) and a Bronze medal in his 200m backstroke with a 16 second personal best time (3.31.71); William Manning placed 5th in his 4 x 1L individual medley (1.50.23); Ashley Clarke took two medals home to the borough with a 6th place in his 100m medley (1.50.32) and a Silver medal for his outstanding swim in the 200m backstroke knocking 31 seconds off his personal best time (3.27.67).
