11 Jan 2007 - Local Club Needs Local Support
Thurrock Swimming Club is the borough's one and only swimming club and is currently looking for support from its local community and businesses.
The club was founded back in 1963 and has served the local community for over 40 years, providing swimming sessions to children as young as 5, right through to adults of 80! In more recent times, the club has gone from strength to strength and under the expertise and leadership of Chief Coach, Alex Morgan and her team, the club have become one of the top clubs in the East of England and have also been crowned Essex Champions, twice in the last 3 years..
The squad swimmers at Thurrock Swimming Club are dedicated, committed and talented individuals who spend anywhere from 10 to18 hours each week training tremendously hard. Most of these sessions are early morning starting as early as 5.15am - through all seasons including winter!
The Club is currently trying to raise £12,000 to send 22 of its senior squad swimmers to a warm weather training camp in Italy, the Lignano, near Venice next October.
The Lignano is a purpose built facility, constructed for the European student Games in 2005 and features a splendid new indoor Olympic size pool. Thurrock's training programme will last 5 days, in which time, swimmers will train rigorously with daily planned training sessions both in the morning and afternoon. The aim of the camp is to provide these local children with world class performance and life skills as well as the valuable experience of training in an international swimming environment. The opportunity will provide these talented athletes with the best possible chance to follow their dreams, achieve their goals and possibly represent their country at the 2012 Olympic games and beyond.
The training camp is being organised by volunteers at Thurrock swimming club in association with Sports Travel International. The club's fund raising team are working tirelessly to help fund this trip, but are still way short of the £12,000 target. The club would therefore welcome sponsorship or donations from local businesses.
If you or your business are keen and able to help, or have any fundraising ideas, please contact Hazel Day, the club's sponsorship co-ordinator at Hazel.Day@manches.com or on 020 7872 8502. Alternatively, please pop down and see us in person. Thurrock's club night is every Friday evening between 6:00pm and 9:00pm at Blackshots Leisure Centre.
