More than 40 squad swimmers from Thurrock Swimming Club travelled to Fulwell Cross Swimming Pool on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd October to take part in the London Borough of Redbridge 100m/200m County Qualifying Meet.
The weekend turned out to be a great success for the swimmers aged from 9 to 15. For the youngest swimmers, some as young as 9, this was their first official competitive gala. The swimmers returned to the Borough with an abundance of personal bests, placings and medals.
Some of the swimmers to have managed Essex County qualifying times were : Molly Epsley 100m breast (1.28.04); Francesca Day for both her 100m (2nd place) and 200m freestyle in the 14-15 year age group (1.07.54 and 2.26.30), Georgia Mills 50m breaststroke (47.48), Kayleigh Sims for both her 200m freestyle (2.56.59) and 50m freestyle (36.77), Rose Merritt for her 50m butterfly with a 6 second pb (46.48), Danielle Sayer for her 100m freestyle and a 5th placing (1.09.23).
Shannon Harold also gained an Essex qualifying time in 1st place for her 100m butterfly (1.13.37) with Emma Backhurst in 3rd place with 1.17.01.
Personal best times were achieved by most of the Thurrock Swimmers. Gareth Hawkins swam a 29 second pb in his 200m butterfly in the Boys 11 and under age group (3.08.31).
Emily Neal had an excellent 100m backstroke swim knocking 20 seconds off her personal best time (1.22.81). Charlotte Lamb swam well in the 200m butterfly knocking off 15 seconds to achieve a 3.00.46.
In the 200m individual medley Lily Mann (3.31.32), Katherine Stephens (2.59.94) and Amy Hatfield (2.44.08) all swam to secure new personal best times.
In the 12 and 13 age group for 200m backstroke Katie Backhurst knocked off 8 seconds to create her new personal best time of 2.55.04.
Thomas Archer (age 9) managed 3.28.57 in the boys under 11 freestyle and Alex Stanley (age 9) swam a good 50m butterfly knocking 8 seconds off (51.29). In the boys under 11 50m freestyle Sonny Ford swam to a 6th placing.
In the girls 100m individual medley all the Thurrock swimmers achieved personal best times. Amongst those were Rachael Moore (1.34.59), Amy Gore (1.28.52), Brooke McCarthy (1.30.75) Rebecca Hayes (1.32.69), Jenna Dove (1.26.08) and Natalie Swinnerton (1.31.79).
In the older age group Thomas Ford, age 14 from Grays swam a good 200m breaststroke with a 6 second pb (3.15.75).
Kerriann Chipperfield knocked over 2 seconds off her 100m backstroke (1.17.96) in the 12-13 age group with Abigail Sayer also achieving a personal best time (1.17.26).
All in all an excellent weekend for the Thurrock swimmers and the season has only just started!
