Junior Speedo League - Division One Final
Bishops Stortford Pool
An unfortunate clash of dates between the regional Southern Counties Championships and the final of the M11 Junior Speedo league meant that Thurrock Swimming Club team manager, Debbie Grix had to make some rapid changes to her team for the premier junior swimming division finals bringing in 10 year old twins Ben and Oliver Mayo from East Tilbury and George Fautley from Aveley for their debut club gala.. Thurrock were pitched against the other 5 top performing teams from the region; Romford, Borough of Enfield, Runnymede, White Darts and Bishops Stortford . With several of the Thurrock stars missing, the pressure was really on the young team.
The nine years boys team has consistently performed outstandingly throughout the season and once again Gareth Hawkins, Charlie Davis, Bradley Clarke, Thomas Head and Sonny Ford romped home first in both their medley and freestyle relays. Sonny went on to win the 25m individual Fly (19.9 seconds) while Thomas and Gareth both finished second in Freestyle (18.44) and Backstroke (21.03) respectively.
However, far from swimming in the boys shadow - the 9 year old girls relay team of Katherine Stephens, Amy Gore, Georgia Mills and Rebecca Hayes rose to the importance of the occasion to score their own double relay victories. The girls completed the freestyle a clear seven seconds ahead of their nearest rivals (1.28.78). Katherine enjoyed a sensational afternoon winning both the individual 25m Freestyle (18.34) and fly (20.82) with Georgia Mills continuing to impress by finishing second in the breaststroke (25.09).
10 Year old Harriette Davis again proved her ability by winning both the 50m Backstroke (40.03) and Freestyle (34.66) and the 11 years relay team of Abigail Sayer, Sarah Dibble, Danielle Sayer and Joanna Waterman swam to victory in their Medley relay with a second place in the freestyle event.
It was certainly fair to say that the opposition was intense with the Thurrock swimmers having to fight for every point earned. There were some notable swims for the Thurrock team though. In the 12 year age group, Molly Epsly was placed second twice in Fly (36.4) and Freestyle (31.91) and there were also second places for Connor Harold (34.87 - Fly) and Braden Wren (37.84 -Backstroke).
11 Year old Breaststroke specialist Joanna Waterman came second in the 50m Breaststroke (43.8) and there were third place swims for 10 year old Charlie Hard (52.19 - Breaststroke) and Abigail Sayer (40.56 - fly).
With a third place in the final event - the 8 man Squadron Relay, Thurrock secured third place in Division One overall with 178 points. Team managers Debbie Grix and Chris Hatton were full of praise for the young swimmers.
