LOCAL CLUB NEEDS

LOCAL SUPPORT

Thurrock Swimming Club has ambitions plans for 2008, including a special training trip to Italy in October.

Under the leadership of chief coach Alex Morgan the borough club has become one of the top swimming squads in the East of England.

Three times in the last four years the side has been crowned Essex Champions.

The Club’s Sponsorship Secretary, Hazel Day, said “The Club is currently trying to raise £20,000 to send 31 of its senior squad swimmers to a warm weather training camp in Italy – the world famous Lignano – near Venice in October half term.  The Lignano is a purpose built facility, constructed for the European Student Games in 2005.

It features a splendid new indoor Olympic size pool.  Thurrock’s training programme will last five days, in which time, swimmers will train rigorously with daily planned training sessions both in the morning and afternoon, coupled with daily land training sessions”.

“The aim of the camp is to provide these local children with world class performance and life skills as well as the valuable experience of training in an international swimming environment”.

“The opportunity will provide these talented athletes with the best possible chance to follow their dreams and achieve their goals” She added.

Last year 22 swimmers gave up their October half term break to train in Italy.

One selected swimmer who was unfortunately unable to attend the 2007 training camp was Braden Wren of Orsett.

Braden joined Kelly  College in Devon and is now achieving a personal best time of 2.14 for the 200m butterfly – his strongest stroke.

The training camp is being organised by volunteers at Thurrock Swimming Club in association with Sports Travel International.

Last year the fundraising team managed to raise the £10,600 needed to send the swimmers.

This was only possible with the team working tirelessly in fund raising events.

The swimmers wore polo shorts sponsored by nPower.

D J W Electrical Engineering Ltd of Grays donated the much needed funds to make up the shortfall of nearly £2,000.

This year the fundraising team’s efforts are severely stretched to raise the £20,000 needed.

Youngsters intending to make the training camp include : Abigail Sayer, Amy Hatfield, Alex Delicata, Alex Mangan, Amy Beardwell-Lacey, Amy Gore, Bradley Clarke, Brooke McCarthy, Charlie Hard, Charlie Hayes, Charlotte Delicata, Charlotte Lamb, Conor Harrold, Daniel Sayer, Emily Neal, Francesca Day, Gareth Hawkins, Georgia Hunt, Georgia Mills, James Mitchell, Jason Daniels, Katherine Stephens, Kerriann Chipperfield, Megan Langridge, Melissa Cowell, Mollie Epsly, Rebecca Hayes, Ryan Daniels, Sonny Ford, Tom Ford, Tom Mangan, Whitney Hard.
